South African cycling is in mourning today following the death of accomplished and beloved cyclist Ryan Cox in the early hours of this morning.
Cox underwent surgery for a vascular lesion in France a couple of weeks ago and on Monday complications arose when he was back with his family in Kempton Park.
His condition deteriorated rapidly, to such an extent that he went into cardiac arrest and was rushed to hospital on Monday evening.
In the hospital his heart stopped on numerous occasions and doctors managed to keep him alive with adrenalin injections before rushing him into emergency surgery to try and repair a ruptured artery in his groin.
By Tuesday morning the news from doctors was damning. “The doctors said his organs started failing and that he wasn’t likely to make it through the day,” said his close friend Clint Curtis.
“They said that the artery had been leaking for some time and that the blood had seeped into almost his entire body, affecting his organs. They tried to repair as much damage as possible, but in the end knew that only a miracle would be able to save him,” said Curtis.
After fighting for his life throughout yesterday, Cox finally passed away at 5:15 this morning.
Cox had been a professional for eight years and rode on various European and South African professional squads before joining the Barloworld squad two years ago.
He represented South Africa at the Olympics and Commonwealth Games. The highlihght of his career came last year when he rode to overall victory in the Tour de Langkawi in Malaysia, triumphing over some of the world's best climbers.
Cycling was a family business with the Cox's with mom Karyn and grandma Nan always present at the races. Karyn was also a respected judge and race referee.
The thoughts and prayers of the entire Cyclingnews crew are with the Cox family. South African cycling has lost a giant who was truly one of the best cyclists the country had ever produced.
