Mit Azevedo und Danielson sind sie natürlich anwärter auf den sieg. ich denke dass danielson bei us postal wieder zu starker leistung findet. fassa bortolo konnte für ihn einfach nciht das richtige sein...

FROM THE ORGANISER OF TELEKOM MALAYSIA LE TOUR DE LANGKAWI

Dear friends,

I am sure most of you have watched with disbelief the terrible scenes of devastation as a result of last Sunday’s tsunami in Asia. By the grace of God, Malaysia can consider itself fortunate in that the impact of the waves was limited to brief stretches of coastline with the resulting damage and loss of life relatively small.

In view of the forthcoming Le Tour de Langkawi (28th Jan-6th Feb 2005), I wish to present clear information so that you may better understand the current situation in Malaysia:-

• Based on the latest report (28/12/04, pm), 51 persons are dead, 218 injured and 18 missing.

• Those who perished were either local picnickers or anglers who were on the beach or out at sea. About 700 homes were destroyed. They were mostly from the coastal villages of Penang and Kedah.

• In Malaysia, where such natural disasters and calamities have never occurred before, the situation is very much under control. The crisis management committees were activated on site yesterday at Langkawi and Penang to monitor the situation and provide all necessary assistance to those affected by the tidal wave. Crisis management teams are maintaining close contact with the hotel general managers and resort operators.

• At Penang and Langkawi, hotel operations have returned back to normal. Only the beachfronts of some hotels were affected by the tidal wave. Except for the beachfronts, where the cleaning up of the debris is expected to take a few days, all hotels and resorts in the affected areas are now operating as usual, while tourist attractions are unaffected.

• Meanwhile, all gateways and airports are fully open and it is business as usual. The country remains a safe destination for visitors and tourists.

• Since peninsular Malaysia is sheltered by the island of Sumatra and not directly exposed to the Indian Ocean, it is relatively safe from the direct effects of the tsunami aftershocks.

• Neither the route, hotel resorts or facilities involved with Le Tour de Langkawi 2005 have been affected by the tsunami. The organisers preparations for the event continue and remain unaffected.

The above is an accurate assessment and we shall be keeping you updated on a regular basis until the situation in the region stabilizes. Should you require any further information, then please do not hesitate to contact me direct on +************* or email at **@tdl.com.my

We appreciate your continued support and look forward to welcoming you to Malaysia for the 10th edition of Le Tour de Langkawi next month.

Und ich hatte noch etwas von der Organisation bekommen:

Dear Bart,

Many thanks for your kind words and we like you share your disbelief at this terrible tragedy. The loss has reached all corners of the world not just Asia and we are overwhelmed with the compassion shown by everyone this past week.

Malaysia was thankfully spared a catastrophe mainly due to the surrounding islands acting as a buffer/breaker to the tidal waves. Whilst 65 lives are known to be lost here with 6 still missing, these figures are in no way comparable to the devastation and loss that took place in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand etc. It’s all terribly sad which is why we are keen to support in anyway we can, these people are desperate for help and its touching to hear that even as far away as the Netherlands our friends there are helping out.

Damage in Malaysia was limited to a few beachfront areas whilst those hotels affected are now running back to normal. Neither the route, hotel resorts or facilities involved with Le Tour de Langkawi 2005 have been affected by the tsunami. The organisers preparations for the event continue and remain unaffected.

The race is fully supported by the Malaysian government and plans are underway for the event to serve as both a donation platform for victims in affected areas and as a message to the world that Malaysia is a safe destination and very much open for business.

The race shall be televised delayed LIVE each day on Eurosport from 28th Jan-6th Feb between 1400-1500hrs CET. I hope you will find time to watch us.

With kindest regards,

Simon Donnellan
Managing Director
First Cartel Sdn Bhd
Organisers of the Telekom Malaysia Le Tour de Langkawi
